Superbowl XLII May Break All Previous Betting Records

Super Bowl betting starts by talking about the favorite and the over.

That is what Super Bowl betting is all about. The Super Bowl betting public just cant ever see the underdog winning. You would think that usually the public would be wrong in their assumptions about the Super Bowl betting favorite, but oftentimes they are not.

Of the Super Bowl betting games the favorite and dog are actually quite close in Super Bowl betting numbers. Depending upon the closing number it varies a little bit but the consensus is that the favorites are 21-17 with three pushes.

The underdog has actually won the game outright 12 times, so the pointspread only came into play 8 times out of 41. If you picked the winner then you probably won your Super Bowl betting choice. What was the biggest Super Bowl betting spread you ask? The largest point spread of any Super Bowl was Super Bowl betting XXIX where San Francisco was an 18 point favorite against San Diego.
The 49ers won and covered easily against the Super Bowl betting pointspread 49-26. There is a little bit of question about a previous Super Bowl betting line though. Some people think Super Bowl betting III had a larger pointspread. The Colts opened as a 17 point favorite against the Jets and there were reports it was at a 20 point spread before the game.

The problem with those reports is that it is more word of mouth than actual records like you see now on the computer. The story of that game was Joe Namath guaranteeing victory and delivering as the Jets upset Baltimore 16-7.

Super Bowl odds have the Patriots as a heavy favorite but New England has not rewarded bettors of late. The Patriots are 1-7 against the spread in their last 8 games and it is also worth noting that the Patriots have been to five Super Bowls and have only covered the Super Bowl odds only once. The Giants have been a pointspread winner of late, covering their last five games. They are 10-1 on the road this season and the NFL has designated them the road team in the Superbowl although the game is played on a neutral field in Arizona.

Early Super Bowl odds are often bet by the wise guys as they look for value. Taking the Giants plus the points and the game under the total would be the best value but that doesnt mean those bets will win. Super Bowls have seen the favorite cover more than half the time and the game go over more often than not.

Super Bowl odds should rise as the public starts betting the game. Usually with Super Bowl odds there is a lot of betting action just after the Super Bowl odds are released. Then things settle in and the Super Bowl odds dont move much until a couple of days before the game. Super Bowl odds this year are expected to attract a record amount of money. Nevada, where sports betting is legal in the U.S., is expected to set a record with more than $100 million in wagers. World-wide, the numbers are expected to be in the billions, although no official numbers can be tracked for Superbowl betting.

New York is the early betting choice in Super Bowl odds but that may not continue in the days leading up to the game. The Patriots will be playing in perfect weather in Arizona and the offense that has been bottled up in recent weeks in the cold weather of New England should be unleashed in the Superbowl against the Giants.

Good Luck, see you at the pay window
